Thymosin beta 4 in corneal cells: apoptosis changed, proliferation did not

The in-vitro study distinguished cell-survival markers from cell growth.

Preclinical studyPaper year: 2004Thymosin beta 4

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

Nontransformed human corneal epithelial cells were exposed to ethanol in culture. The investigators examined mitochondrial integrity, cytochrome-c release, Bcl-2, caspase activity and cell proliferation after exposure to thymosin beta 4.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The reported response included less mitochondrial disruption, reduced cytochrome-c release and lower activity of several caspases. The researchers did not find a significant effect on proliferation under the tested conditions.

03 / LIMITS

How should it be interpreted?

Cultured human cells are still preclinical evidence. This experiment did not assess clinical eye healing or safety. It studied thymosin beta 4 and cannot establish equivalence to TB-500-labeled products; an apoptosis result also should not be described as a proven increase in cell growth.
