GHK-Cu and collagen synthesis: an early fibroblast experiment

The laboratory study separated collagen production from an increase in cell number.

Preclinical studyPaper year: 1988GHK-Cu

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

Cultured fibroblasts were exposed to the copper-bound GHK complex and collagen synthesis was measured across experimental concentrations. The investigators also considered a possible relationship between the GHK sequence and type I collagen.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The authors reported increased collagen synthesis without a corresponding change in cell number. This finding concerns production of a matrix component in a controlled culture system, rather than direct observation of a cosmetic or clinical outcome.

03 / LIMITS

How should it be interpreted?

Collagen synthesis in vitro does not establish wrinkle reduction, useful wound repair or safety in people. Cell source, copper chemistry and assay conditions affect interpretation. A hypothesis about peptide release during tissue breakdown is distinct from demonstrating the process in a human wound.
